The New York Yankees made a notable roster move that could complicate Jasson Domínguez’s path to an Opening Day role.
New York signed veteran slugger Randal Grichuk to a minor-league contract with an invitation to spring training. The move creates additional competition for the fourth outfielder spot and could push Domínguez toward a return to Triple-A to begin the season.
Yankees insider Brendan Kuty of The Athletic described Domínguez as potentially redundant within the current roster construction. Kuty noted that the Yankees are expected to evaluate Grichuk in both left field and center field as a possible platoon option alongside Trent Grisham. Grisham hit 34 home runs last season but has historically been more effective against right-handed pitching, making a right-handed complement like Grichuk a logical fit.
Kuty also pointed out that Domínguez, a switch hitter, has shown stronger production against right-handed pitching and struggled defensively in left field last season, the only position where the Yankees have appeared comfortable deploying him regularly. As a result, Domínguez could be forced to open the year with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, a significant development for a player once regarded as one of baseball’s most highly touted prospects.
Yankees Emphasize Everyday Development
While Domínguez has flashed impact potential at the major-league level, the organization appears focused on his long-term growth. General manager Brian Cashman stated during the offseason that consistent everyday at-bats would be in Domínguez’s best interest.
Cashman explained that the final decision will depend on how spring training unfolds and which players are healthy and performing. He also noted that the roster remains flexible, allowing the Yankees to adjust based on performance and circumstance as they approach the end of camp.
Domínguez appeared in 123 games for New York last season, hitting .257 with 10 home runs and 47 RBIs. Despite those solid numbers, the Yankees appear hesitant to limit his development in a part-time role.
Outfield Competition Intensifies
The Yankees’ starting outfield is set, with Cody Bellinger in left field, Grisham in center, and Aaron Judge in right. That leaves Domínguez, Grichuk, and Spencer Jones competing for the final outfield spot.
Grichuk’s experience as a veteran reserve may give him an edge for a bench role, while Domínguez and Jones could benefit from everyday playing time in Triple-A rather than limited major league opportunities.
Cashman reiterated that the club will evaluate all options throughout the spring and make decisions based on performance and team needs, acknowledging that injuries can also influence roster construction.
The Yankees are scheduled to open their season on March 25 against the San Francisco Giants, and how the outfield competition unfolds in the coming weeks will be closely monitored.
