Sarbananda Sonowal, who is the current Chief Minister of Assam organised a meeting with his cabinet and passed the decision of appointing World Championship sprinter Hima Das as a Deputy Superintendent of Police in the state.
There were others decisions as well which were discussed at the meeting after which the Assam government decided to amend their sports policy and appoint sports persons as Class-I and Class-II officers in different department of the state like Police, Excise, Transport etc, this was revealed to the media by government spokesperson Industry minister Chandra Mohan Patowary.
The people at the meeting came to the conclusion of appointing Das in the DSP rank in Assam Police and also a category of Class I officers will be preserved for sportspersons who will win medals at the Olympics, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, etc.
Nicknamed as the Dhing Express, Hima was overjoyed with the appointment in the Assam Police as she showed her gratitude and appreciation on Twitter. She thanked Assam Chief Minister and former Union Sports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal for the job, and also mentioned how it will only motivate her to work harder.
“I thank our Hon’ble Chief Minister @sarbanandsonwal sir @himantabiswa sir for my appointment as Deputy SP with @assampolice The decision is a huge motivation for me. I look forward to be of service to my state and my nation. Jai Hind!” Hima said in a tweet.
Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju also heaped praises on the Assam Government for implementing such a plan. “Well done! Assam Cabinet, headed by CM @sarbanandsonwal Ji has decided to offer the post of DSP in Assam Police to sprinter queen @HimaDas8!,” Rijiju tweeted.
Hima Das has already impressed every Indian with her pace and ability to win medals on track and field, where once Indians could only dream about winning medals. She became the first-ever Indian athlete to win a gold medal in any format of a global track and field event at IAAF World U20 Championships when she clocked a speed of 51.46 seconds.
