Bajrang Punia’s Provisional Suspension Revoked Amidst Doping Controversy

The National Anti-Doping Agency’s (NADA) Anti-Doping Disciplinary Panel (ADDP) has revoked the provisional suspension of prominent Indian wrestler Bajrang Punia. The suspension was initially imposed due to allegations that Punia refused to submit a urine sample during the Olympic wrestling trials, which were organized by the now-defunct ad hoc committee.

This decision, dated May 31, 2024, comes amid ongoing uncertainties as the NADA has yet to serve a formal Notice of Charge against Punia.

The ADDP’s order stated that the provisional suspension was lifted pending the formal issuance of a Notice of Charge by the NADA. The panel clarified that this decision was made without delving into the merit of the explanations provided by Punia for his refusal to submit the sample or the counterarguments presented by the NADA’s counsel. The panel emphasized that if the NADA decides to formally charge Punia, the matter should be promptly scheduled for a final hearing.

Vidushpat Singhania, the sports lawyer representing Bajrang Punia, welcomed the decision, noting that Punia is now free to train and compete. “We also hope that after seeing the explanation given during the hearing and the order, the NADA shall not press notice of charge,” Singhania stated.

Punia, a decorated wrestler and a significant figure in Indian sports, argued during the hearing that his refusal to submit the sample was due to fears of being targeted for his active participation in a protest led by fellow wrestlers against harassment.

Punia also contended that he was approached by the Dope Collection Officer (DCO) during an event and believed the officer should have waited until the event concluded. Additionally, he cited a past incident where a DCO visited his home with expired testing kits, further fueling his mistrust.

The NADA’s counsel, Manpreet Kaur, countered these arguments by asserting that Punia did not participate in the bronze medal playoff due to an injury, rendering his explanations for refusing the sample unreasonable. Kaur emphasized that Punia was obligated to comply with the rules and provide a sample when requested. She also mentioned that the DCO involved in the expired kit incident was suspended shortly after the occurrence, indicating NADA’s commitment to maintaining proper procedures.

As the situation stands, the NADA’s next steps are crucial. Should they decide to formally charge Punia, it would lead to a more detailed investigation and potentially another hearing. The sporting community and Punia’s supporters are closely monitoring the developments, hoping for a resolution that allows the wrestler to continue his career without further hindrance.

In a related doping case, the Anti-Doping Appeal Panel (ADAP) has upheld the four-year suspension of Indian sprinter Dutee Chand. Chand, a national record holder in the 100 meters, tested positive for selective androgen receptor modulators (SARMS) such as ostarine, ligandrol, and andarine, resulting in a provisional ban in January 2023. Despite her defense claiming the substances entered her system through supplements, the ADAP reaffirmed the suspension.
