Alcaraz withdraws from Spain’s Davis Cup quarter-final

Carlos Alcaraz has decided to opt out of Spain’s Davis Cup quarterfinal due to a hamstring injury. Alcaraz suffered the injury while trying to catch Jannik Sinner’s serve in the Nitto ATP Finals on Sunday.

After losing the summit clash in straight sets, Alcaraz admitted he felt a bit of discomfort in his hamstring but he was able to move fast, and the injury didn’t hamper his physical movement. However, the Spaniard admitted it did affect him mentally as it remained at the back of his mind while trying to make the difficult points.

“I felt something in my hamstring after trying to catch one serve,” Alcaraz said after the final in the press conference. “I could say that it didn’t affect me too much because I could run well, I could go to the balls well. [There were] thoughts about how [it] is going to be if I do crazy things that I’m used to doing, how is it going to be. Those thoughts were in my mind sometimes. But I could play well.”

“I am very sorry to announce that I will not be able to play with Spain in the Davis Cup in Bologna,” Alcaraz wrote on X on Tuesday morning. “I have edema in my right hamstring and the medical recommendation is not to compete. I have always said that playing for Spain is the greatest thing there is and I was really looking forward to helping fight for the Salad Bowl [trophy]. I am going home hurt…”

Meanwhile, Spain will be led by David Ferrer, and they have players like Jaume Munar, Pedro Martinez and Pablo Carreno Busta. Spain will face Czechia — led by Jiri Lehecka and Jakub Mensik — on Thursday at 10 a.m. CET. The winner will play either Argentina or Germany in the semi-finals.

Alcaraz ends his 2025 season with a Tour-leading 71 wins and eight titles.
