Former World No.2 Alex Corretja believes Carlos Alcaraz’s rise to the top level is a blessing for Spain’s tennis. Corretja also compared Alcaraz’s achievements with legendary Rafael Nadal. Alcaraz, 22, is currently the World No.1 in PIF ATP rankings and he is a six-time Grand Slam champion.
The young Spaniard needs to win the Australian Open to complete his Career Grand Slam. In 2025, Alcaraz won the Roland Garros and recently won the US Open by beating Jannik Sinner in both Slam’s finals.
Alcaraz is ticking all the right boxes and has a lot of weapons in his armory. The Spaniard now has 23 tour-level titles in his career and he would look to keep up the good show.
“It’s a blessing to have a player like Carlos Alcaraz. He is truly a gift to the sport. It is nearly a miracle to be honest. We have had so many great players in the past, but after Rafael Nadal, our legend of the sport, all of a sudden we have Carlos who is comparable,” Corretja said while talking to Bolavip.
“He is winning Grand Slams, he is the world No. 1. It is something very unexpected and very fortunate for us to have him,” he added.
On the other hand, Alcaraz won the French Open title after beating Jannik Sinner in an epic final. This was the fifth Slam title for the Spaniard and coincidently, he was the same age as Rafael Nadal when the latter won his fifth Major. Nadal was one day younger when he beat Roger Federer in another final for the ages at Wimbledon in 2008 for his fifth Grand Slam title.
“Honestly the coincidence of winning my fifth Grand Slam in the same age as Rafa Nadal, I’m going to say that’s the destiny, I guess. “I mean, it is a stat that I’m going to keep for me forever, winning the fifth Grand Slam at the same time as Rafa, my idol, my inspiration,” Alcaraz said.
Alcaraz will be in action in the Laver Cup in San Francisco.
