Alexander Zverev admits he wasn’t good enough after Australian Open final loss against Jannik Sinner

World No.2 Alexander Zverev admitted he wasn’t good enough after suffering a straight-set loss against Jannik Sinner in the Australian Open final at the Rod Laver Arena on Sunday. Sinner defended his Happy Slam title after beating the German by 6-3, 7-6, 6-3 to win his third Major.

Meanwhile, this was the third Slam final for Zverev but he could not bring his best to the court. Zverev admitted he failed to challenge an in-form Sinner and said the Italian was too good for him in the end.

“I’m just not good enough. It’s as simple as that,” Zverev said at the post-match presentation.

“It sucks standing here next to this thing and not being able to touch it. Congrats to Jannik, you’re the best player in the world by far. I was hoping that I could be more of a competitor today but you’re too good. I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to lift the trophy but I’ll keep coming back, I’ll keep trying,” he added.

Sinner was also seen consoling Zverev before the German was called on stage to share his views on the game.

Zverev said he is doing everything he can to go all the way in a Major and he will keep on trying.

“I’m doing everything I can. I’m working as hard as I ever did. I think I’m doing all the right things off-court. I think I’m practicing the right things. But I lost in straight sets today. I mean, those are facts. That is a fact. I lost to Jannik in straight sets today,” the 27-year-old said.

“I mean, I don’t want to end my career as the best player of all time to never win a Grand Slam, that’s for sure,” he added.Zverev would look to continue his good form in the upcoming tournaments.
