Andy Murray has withdrawn himself from the Men’s singles tennis tournament at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games due to a minor thigh strain.
The 34 year old Glasgow born Tennis Player, who won Gold medal both in 2012 London Olympics as well as in 2016 Rio Olympics has decided to withdraw himself after thigh strain and therefore will not be able to defend his title.
The Scotish born Murray however, will continue to compete for Team Great Britain in the doubles category of gentlemen with compatriot Joe Salisbury. The decision came after consultation with medical staff in relation to a quad strain.
The 34 year old who won two Wimbledon men’s singles championships in 2013 and 2016 showed his dismay while releasing the statement, “I am really disappointed at having to withdraw but the medical staff have advised me against playing in both events,” said Murray in a statement.
The 2012 US Open winner said the decision was difficult for him after learning about the injury and discussing with medical staff, “So, I have made the difficult decision to withdraw from the singles and focus on playing doubles with Joe”, further quotes Andy Murray.
The Brit due to face ninth-seed Felix Auger-Aliassime from Canada in the first round of the men’s singles, but due to his withdrawal, he was replaced on the order of play by Australian Max Purcell.
Andy Murray, whose career is somehow overshadowed by numerous injuries, was back on the Tennis court and managed to come up with an inspirational performance in the 2021 Wimbledon championships. Though he lost in the third round against 22 years old Canadian Denis Shapavalov, who reached the semi-final before being knocked out by eventual winner, Novak Djokovic.
