Tennis legend Boris Becker has lauded Jannik Sinner’s mental strength after the Italian won the Wimbledon title, beating Carlos Alcaraz in a four-set contest on Sunday. Sinner registered a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 win against the Spaniard and became the first Italian to win the Wimbledon crown.
The World No.1 was able to bring his A-game to the court and dominated Alcaraz after losing the opening set. Sinner had suffered a heartbreaking loss in the Roland Garros final against Alcaraz despite having three championship points in the fourth set. However, the 23-year-old was able to bounce back strongly at SW19.
“Jannik’s greatest opponent is himself, his reflection in the mirror. In a way, his great strength is mental,” Becker said. “He came back from his suspension by reaching the final in Rome and Paris, and now at Wimbledon.
After winning the Australian Open, Sinner also served a three-month ban for doping and the German said it is never easy for a player to come back after such a ban.
“Very few could have come back like that after a three-month suspension. He also went to Halle and, match after match, continued to build his form and confidence.
“Jannik has always been very focused; his personality is unique. However, when it comes to consistency, Jannik has been unbeatable right now.”
After Sinner’s win, 22-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal congratulated the Italian for his maiden title at the championships.
“Congratulations @janniksin on your first @Wimbledon! Special moments!,” he wrote. “I know it won’t be an easy day, but, congratulations @carlosalcaraz on another Grand Slam final and for the great season you’re having!”
Sinner would look to carry his good form in the upcoming North American swing.
