Carlos Alcaraz bested arch-rival Jannik Sinner to win his second US Open title in a four-set contest. The Spaniard registered a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 win to win his sixth Slam in his career at the Arthur Ashes Stadium, New York on Sunday. With this win, Alcaraz will replace the Italian as No. 1 in the PIF ATP Rankings, ending his 65-week stay.
Alcaraz was able to hit the ground running, breaking Sinner’s serve in the opening game of the match. The Spaniard then took a double break and won the first set comprehensively. Sinner could only win three points on Alcaraz’s serve in the opening set and thus the Spaniard was able to bring his best to the court.
However, Sinner made a solid comeback in the second set but Alcaraz took the third set convincingly. In the fourth set, Alcaraz got a break in the fifth game. The Italian wasn’t at his absolute best and missed shots, which he usually nails.
Alcaraz outplayed Sinner by 42 winners to 21 and dropped just nine points on his first serve in a convincing two-hour, 42-minute match. The 22-year-old gave his gratitude to his family for all the support.
“My team, my family, I am really lucky to have you guys, to be honest,” said Alcaraz at the trophy presentation. “The hard work you do to make me even better, not only in the professional part, but the personal part as well. Every achievement that I am [making] is thanks to you, and this one is no less, it’s also yours.”
On the other hand, Sinner also congratulated Alcaraz on an amazing win.
“You are doing an amazing job,” Sinner said to Alcaraz and his team. “I know [there’s] a lot of hard work behind this performance today, you were better than me. Enjoy it. It’s a great moment.”
