World No.2 Carlos Alcaraz revealed that his unwavering belief helped him win the Roland Garros final against Jannik Sinner. In the fourth set, Alcaraz had to save three championship points on his serve and he was able to save all of them to stay alive.
Alcaraz had lost the opening two sets against the Italian but made an inspiring comeback in one of the best Roland Garros finals of all time despite having his back against the wall.
Alcaraz said in an interview with Italian outlet La Gazzetta dello Sport, “I often think about it and I still don’t know how I managed to overturn that game.
“The truth is that in sports, but not only in sports, you have to keep believing in it, to believe it all the way.
“Tennis is a long and challenging road, and you are completely alone with your thoughts. So the key, in the Roland Garros final against Jannik, was that: to think that you could win the match, even in the most difficult moments, without letting yourself be brought down”.
However, Alcaraz suffered a four-set loss against Jannik Sinner in the Wimbledon final. The Spaniard won the opening set by 6-4 but lost the next three sets by the same margin.
Meanwhile, Alcaraz has decided to pull out of the Toronto Open after Wimbledon. Alcaraz said he wanted to rest after competing consistently on the tour.
He wrote on his X handle, “After many consecutive weeks of competition without rest, I will not be able to play in Toronto this year. I have small muscles issues and I need to recover physically and mentally for what comes next. To the tournament and to my fans in Canada I am very sorry, I will see you next year!”
Alcaraz would aim to make a solid return to the tour.
