Novak Djokovic’s former coach Goran Ivanisevic reckons Jannik Sinner is currently a better player than Carlos Alcaraz. Sinner and Alcaraz are the future of the sport and have dominated the tour in the last couple of years.
While Alcaraz has won five Slams in his young career, Sinner is hot on the heels of his rivals with four Majors. The duo recently met in the Wimbledon final, which the Italian won by 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 to win his maiden title at SW19.
Sinner and Alcaraz also met each other in the Roland Garros final, which the latter won in a thrilling five-set contest. Alcaraz had also saved three championship points against Sinner in Paris.
Currently, Alcaraz has an 8-5 head-to-head record against Sinner on the tour.
“In my opinion, he [Sinner] is currently a slightly better player than Alcaraz, and the two of them are five spears ahead of everyone else,” Ivanisevic told Croatian media outlet Gol.
“The only one who can maybe fight with them is Novak Djokovic, but the others don’t have a chance. Sinner is better, tougher, I don’t know what tactics I would play against Sinner, he has an answer for everything. He comes back, gathers his strength, wins the tournament.”
On the other hand, Alcaraz recently said he wants to take the number one ranking from Sinner.
“Yes, I’m ready,” Alcaraz said. “Last year, after the Olympic Games, I struggled and didn’t achieve great results. So from now on, I won’t have many points to defend until the end of the season. I’ll give my all in the upcoming tournaments to win as many points as possible.
Both Sinner and Alcaraz have decided to pull out of the Toronto Open tournament.
