Former British no.1 Greg Rusedski reckons Alexander Zverev deserves to be the World No.1 in the PIF ATP rankings. The German is currently in second place in the rankings table with 9690 points under his belt.
Jannik Sinner, the current World No.1, has 11500 points to his name. Sinner dropped points after he could not take part in the recently concluded US Open due to a knee injury.
Zverev, on the other hand, was able to close the gap between him and Sinner after winning the New York Major. The German defeated Ben Shelton in the summit clash in a four-set contest.
Zverev has earned 700 more points than Sinner so far in 2026, and Rusedski believes that he currently feels like the ‘unofficial number one’.
“For me, for my opinion and my point of view, Zverev most likely should likely finish world number one, but he’s going to have to play well at the end of the season,” Rusedski said in the latest edition of his podcast.
“There’s about three and a half thousand, four and a half thousand points to get there. He’s only 750 points ahead of Jannik Sinner and we don’t know when Sinner is coming back yet. So from my point of view the unofficial number one is Zverev because he has done better at the majors, but he still has to earn it.”
On the other hand, after winning the US Open, Zverev had admitted that Sinner is currently the best player on the tour when he is healthy.
When Zverev was asked if he thinks he is the best player in the world right now, he said, “You have to take everything into consideration. With Jannik Sinner being injured and Carlos Alcaraz coming back from injury after four months, right now, probably yes. Both of them healthy and both of them at the top of their game, maybe not.
“But if we say right, right now with Jannik being injured and Carlos coming back from injury, maybe. I mean, four, five months ago when both of them were healthy, I wasn’t. I was losing to Jannik all the time. So if everyone is healthy, I think Jannik is still ahead. It’s as simple as that.”
Zverev is currently taking part in the Laver Cup.
