The World no.1 Novak Djokovic could not complete Calendar Slam as he lost in straight sets against Daniil Medvedev in the US Open final by 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. Djokovic won 27 matches on the trot in the four major but could not cross the final hurdle against Medvedev.
It has been a tiring season for Djokovic as he has given his everything on the court, both mentally as well as physically. Djokovic played at the top of his game and the Serbian had an incredible season as he won three majors.
World no.1 has an entry into Indian Wells which will be played next month whereas he was the first player to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals, which will be played from November 14-21 in Turin. However, Djokovic has no plans for the remainder of the season and he might pull out of these two events.
“Let me tell you – I have no plan, absolutely nothing,” Djokovic said. “I don’t know if I’m going to play anything, anywhere… I’m just here in New York right now.”
Meanwhile, Djokovic was dominated by Medvedev in the US Open final. The Russian was at his best and won 80% of his first-serve points. Djokovic feels he was well prepared for the final but Medvedev was far better than the Serbian on the given day.
“I think that I really tried to do everything in my power to prepare in the best possible way, to bring myself to the optimal state of body, mind, and spirit,” the Serb added. “I really don’t know what I would change, I really did my best… I simply played against a better player – who had more enthusiasm and energy.”
Djokovic ticked the right boxes throughout the season but he could not get going in the US Open final. The World no.1 was at his absolute best in 2021 and he will look to bounce back stronger in the 2022 season if he decides to withdraw from the next two tournaments.
