India Set to Face Togo in 2025 Davis Cup World Group I Playoffs

India will square off against Togo in the Davis Cup 2025 World Group I playoffs, following the draw conducted by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) earlier this month. The tie, which will be played over two days, is scheduled for either January 31-February 1 or February 1-2, 2025, with the venue yet to be decided by lot.

The format for the tie will feature two singles matches on the first day, followed by a doubles match and two more singles on the second day. India, seeded 10th, will be looking to bounce back from their recent defeat to Sweden in the 2024 World Group I first round, where they were swept 0-4. That loss relegated them back to the playoff stage, where they will now face Togo, a nation making its debut in World Group I.

India earned their spot in the 2024 World Group I by defeating Pakistan 4-0 in the playoffs earlier this year. However, their campaign against Sweden highlighted their recent struggles at this level, continuing a trend that has seen India fall short in previous Davis Cup ties. In recent years, India has failed to progress past the first round, losing to Finland in 2021 and Norway in 2022.

For Togo, this marks their first appearance in the World Group I playoffs. They earned their place after defeating Indonesia 3-2 in February 2024 and following it up with a commanding 4-0 victory over Latvia in September in the World Group II stage. This progress represents a significant milestone for the West African nation as they look to further cement their place in the upper echelons of international tennis.

Historically, India has been a strong competitor in the Davis Cup, reaching the finals three times—in 1966, 1974, and 1987—though they fell short each time. They were runners-up to Australia in 1966, gave a walkover to South Africa in 1974 due to India’s stance against apartheid, and were blanked 5-0 by Sweden in 1987.

A total of 52 nations will compete in the 2025 Davis Cup playoffs, with ties played across 26 home-and-away fixtures. The choice of ground for the India vs. Togo clash will be determined by lot, adding an extra layer of anticipation to the tie.

India will be counting on their experience to overcome Togo and secure a spot in the World Group I again, while Togo will be looking to continue their impressive run in what promises to be an exciting and competitive fixture.
