Jannik Sinner beats Auger-Aliassime to reach Cincinnati SFs

World No.1 Jannik Sinner continued his rich form as he bested Felix Auger-Aliassime to reach Cincinnati Open semifinals. The Italian registered a comfortable 6-0, 6-2 win against the Canadian to make it to the last four of the tournament.

Jannik Sinner has won his last 11 matches and his past 25 hard-court matches and thus he has been in top form. The four-time Grand Slam champion said he was returning very well and was delighted with his game.

“I felt that I was returning very well today,” said Sinner, who won 80 per cent (16/20) of points on Auger-Aliassime’s second serve. “I think that was the key point, which gave me the confidence to serve well. I had a small drop in the second set when he broke me. It could have been a small change but I am happy I broke him back quite early.

“He is a very difficult opponent because he serves well, he moves well. Physically in incredible shape and hits the forehand very well. But we prepared in the best way, also tactically and I felt like today I was playing some great tennis.”

Sinner was able to win in 71 minutes and this was his first win against Auger-Aliassime after losing the first two matches. The World No.1 is yet to drop a single set in the ongoing tournament.

“Today I felt great on court,” Sinner added. “I think you saw that but every day is going to be different. Tomorrow is a day off, which is good for me. We will try and put some reps in and then see what I can do in the semis.”

Sinner will next face France’s Terence Atmane in the semifinal on Friday.
