World No.2 Jannik Sinner bested James Duckworth in straight sets of the second round of the Australian Open at Melbourne Park on Thursday. The defending champion registered a 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 win against the local favorite.
Sinner came up with potent ground shots throughout the match and gave the Australian no chance. The Italian was able to defend all three break points and came up with his best. The four-time Slam champion expressed his delight after reaching the third round of the Happy Slam.
“Every match is very difficult, so I’m very happy to be in the next round,” Sinner said in his on-court interview. “I was returning very well today, and my serve was also good, so I’m very happy about my performance. I want to thank you guys [the crowd]. I know I’m not Australian, but you have been very fair to me, so thank you for the support.”
Sinner also mentioned his arch-rival, Carlos Alcaraz and said the Spaniard has the best drop shot on the tour.
“I think we all know who has the best drop shots… Carlos, of course,” Sinner said of Alcaraz.
Sinner added he is in good shape and would look to carry the good show.
“I feel like I’m in good shape at the moment. Depending on how matches go and how long I stay on court, we will decide what work to do the next day,” said Sinner.
“I know how much work I’ve put in so the body feels good and the mind is in a good moment.
“It is a very special tournament for me and it has been a special court for me in the past years, so let’s see what’s coming this year.”
Sinner will next take on America’s Eliot Spizzirri in the third round of the Australian Open on Saturday.
The Italian is looking to become just the second man in the Open Era — alongside Novak Djokovic — to lift three consecutive Australian Open trophies.
