Wimbledon champion Jannik Sinner said that pressure is a privilege after beating Carlos Alcaraz in a four-set contest in the final at SW19 on Sunday. The World No.1 claimed a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 win against the Spaniard and became the first Italian to win the Wimbledon title.
Sinner lost the opening set against Alcaraz despite having an early break but bounced back to dominate the next three sets. Earlier, Sinner had suffered a heartbreaking Roland Garros final loss against Alcaraz despite having three championship points in the fourth set.
Speaking on CNBC, Sinner said, “Everyone has his own way to handle pressure.
Sinner said if one doesn’t feel the pressure, it means he or she doesn’t care about the result.
“I really like the pressure because I think if you don’t feel pressure it means you don’t care about what you’re doing and I feel privileged to be in the position I am because you have such an amount of pressure.
“But at the same time, you have a target on your back too at times and, this is exactly the motivation [why] I keep working hard.
“Because every player, he knows how I play now, knows how I move, and this is exactly why I always have to improve in practice sessions to get ahead at times and, as I said before, that’s exactly why I need my team.
“And pressure is, I always say, it’s a privilege to have.”
Sinner has been taking giant strides at the top level and this was his fourth Slam title and his first at a non-hard court. The Italian would look to carry the same form in the upcoming North American swing.
