World No.2 Jannik Sinner cruised to the round of 16 of the Vienna Open after beating Daniel Altmaier by 6-0, 6-2 on Wednesday. Sinner dominated the contest as he brought his best to the court. The Italian wrapped up the match in just 58 minutes and gave no chances to the German.
With this win, Sinner extended his indoor hard-court wins to 17 matches. Earlier, Sinner had retired due to a hamstring cramp in the third round of the Shanghai Masters but has bounced back strongly since then.
“I feel like in the first set everything was working very well,” said Sinner. “On indoor courts, you have to be very careful. If your opponent starts to serve well, it’s very difficult to break. But I’m very happy about today’s performance, starting the tournament in a very positive way, not only gamewise but feeling wise.”
Sinner will next meet compatriot Flavio Cobolli, who moved past Tomas Machac 7-6(6), 6-2.
On the other hand, Sinner has decided to withdraw from the Davis Cup and he has faced a lot of backlash in Italy.
Sinner told Sky Sports, “It may not seem like it, but a week of preparation during that period can make all the difference. We won the Davis Cup in 2023 and 2024, and this time we decided this with my team.”
Sinner admitted he accepts all the criticism he has received for opting out of the Davis Cup.
The World No.2 said in the press conference in Vienna, “I accept all the criticism [about the Davis Cup], but I’ve already said everything on this topic and have nothing to add.”
Sinner has been ticking the right boxes, and he would look to carry the good form in Vienna.
