Joao Fonceca has decided to opt out from the Lexus Eastbourne Open due to a right shoulder injury, the 19-year-old Brazilian announced on Tuesday on his social media account.
The Brazilian had suffered a 6-2, 6-2 loss to Yannick Hanfmann in Halle last week and was expected to play at Eastbourne.
“After feeling some slight discomfort in my right shoulder, my team and I have decided, as a precaution, not to compete in the Eastbourne tournament,” Fonseca wrote on Instagram Stories. “The goal is to arrive at Wimbledon in the best possible shape.
“I am very grateful to the tournament organisers for the incredible hospitality. Now it’s time to keep putting in the work. See you at Wimbledon!”
On the other hand, America’s Taylor Fritz, who recently made to the finals of Stuttgart Open and Halle Open, has also withdrawn from Eastbourne. Fritz suffered a three-set loss against Ben Shelton in Stuttgart whereas he suffered a straight set loss against Frances Tiafoe at Halle.
“Unfortunately, I have to withdraw from Eastbourne this year,” Fritz posted on X. “I waited up until after the match warmup to make the decision today because I really did want to play. This is never an easy decision for me, especially when it involves a tournament that means so much to me… While I know it’s the right call, it doesn’t make it any less disappointing.
“I’m very sorry to the fans, the tournament, and everyone who was looking forward to seeing me play. Thank you to Eastbourne for always making me feel so welcome, and I hope to be back on these courts again soon.”
Fritz’s spot in the Eastbourne draw has been taken by lucky loser Felix Gill.
