Eight-time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer has admitted that his goals of going far in the upcoming tournament are high. Federer started off his Grass season on a positive note by defeating qualifier Ilya Ivashka in the first round of the ATP 500 event in Germany, winning by 7-6(4), 7-5.
Meanwhile, Federer won three matches at Roland Garros but decided to pull out before his fourth round match against Matteo Berrettini. Federer didn’t want to push himself too quickly after having undergone two major knee surgeries last year. The Swiss maestro feels the three wins of French Open have helped him prepare for the Wimbledon challenge.
The 20-time Grand slam winner has stated his goal is to win the Wimbledon and he is training and playing accordingly.
“For me here [in Halle] this week, I feel I have a little less pressure because I was able to play three matches in Paris, so it is not as if I have to chase matches,” Roger Federer said. “Winning today was nice as it gives me at least two matches here.”
“The season starts around now but I have been focused this week, recovering from Paris. My Wimbledon goals are high, they have to be high, or I wouldn’t be playing, and anything I get here in terms of matches is positive for Wimbledon.”
Roger Federer looked in good form in the recently concluded French Open and he will look to carry the same in the Grass season. Federer was looking a bit rusty in the Qatar and Geneva Open but he looked near his best in the French Open as he won three games on the trot before pulling out.
The Wimbledon Championship will begin from June 28.
