Japan Naomi Osaka defeated Belarus Victoria Azarenka by 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 to clinch her third Grand slam title and second title at the US Open 2020. Osaka was able to defend their 2019 title as she came up with a complete performance in the finals. It was a battle between a young and an experienced player and in the end, the former was too good for the latter.
Osaka had made her way through to the finals after she had defeated Jennifer Brady in the semifinals in three sets. On the other hand, Azarenka had also taken three sets to go past legendary Serena Williams in the finals. In fact, Azarenka made her way into the Grand Slam finals after a long hiatus of seven years.
Meanwhile, Azarenka had no issues in thrashing Osaka in the first set as she comfortably won by 6-1. However, Osaka was able to bounce back in the second set to level the match. The 22-year old player won the second set by 6-3.
It was all down to the third and final set and Osaka was too good for Azarenka. Both the players managed to hold their serve after the first two games. At 1-1, Osaka was able to hold her serve and then broke Azarenka’s serve to take a lead of 3-1 in the final set.
Osaka was aiming to go 4-1 up on her serve, but Azarenka was not going to throw in the towel. The veteran had three break points as he took a lead of 0-40. However, she was not able to convert even one as Osaka once again made a roaring comeback to hold her serve.
The fourth seed showed no mercy as she came up with some powerful returns to which Azarenka had no answers. Ergo, Osaka was once again able to break Azarenka’s serve and then she served for the championship to close out the game.
