Novak Djokovic had no difficulty in going past Francesco Maestrelli as he defeated the Italian in the second round of the Australian Open by 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 at the Rod Laver Arena on Thursday. Djokovic struck impressive shots from the baseline to keep the pressure on the Italian.
The 23-year-old was able to break Djokovic’s serve in the third set but the latter bounced back even stronger. The Serbian admitted there was a huge difference in conditions while playing at night in the first round and then in the morning session in the second round.
“It did feel like two completely different tournaments playing at night [round one] and day today, particularly with the wind that I think has been blowing this year more than any other year that I’ve been playing here in Australia,” Djokovic said of the conditions. “I have to adjust to that and adapt to a different opponent with a big serve, but overall it’s good. I’m pleased with the way I’m moving and hitting the ball.”
On the other hand, Djokovic reckons Maestrelli has got the game to go upwards in his career.
“I didn’t know much about him until yesterday,” Djokovic said of the 23-year-old Maestrelli, who went through qualifying to make his debut in a Grand Slam main draw. “Nevertheless, respect is always there. I don’t underestimate anyone.
“He’s got a big serve. He’s got a big game. He’s lacking experience on the big stage, but he’s got the game to go high.”
The number four seed said he took some time to fine tune some of his skills in the off-season.
“When I have more time, then I obviously try to look at my game and different elements that I can really improve. Otherwise, what’s the point?” he said. “That’s the kind of mentality I try to nurture. It’s been allowing to me play at the highest level at this age.”
Djokovic will next take on Botic van de Zandschulp in the third round on Saturday.
