Former WTA coach of the year Renzo Furlan believes Novak Djokovic has ‘near-impossible’ odds of winning 25th Slam. Furlan reckons it would be difficult for the Serbian to beat Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner and believes the young pair will need to have bad days for Djokovic to move forward.
The young duo of Alcaraz and Sinner have shared the last eight slams between them on the tour. Meanwhile, Djokovic has won 24 Majors in his glittering career, but he is still looking to win his record-breaking 25th Slam.
Renzo Furlan said on Nord Est, “He can do it, but something strange has to happen: Alcaraz has to have a bad day in the early rounds, or Sinner has to suffer a physical problem like in Shanghai. Of course, if he runs into both of them in the semifinals or the final, even he knows it’s almost impossible.”
On the other hand, Djokovic recently opened up on the hate he received from the Western world when he burst onto the scene to spoil Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal’s party when the duo was ruling the tennis realm.
Djokovic said on Neuspjeh Prvaka, “Federer and Nadal come from two Western powers. I showed up from Serbia and said out loud that I was going to be number one. The whole system didn’t like that: media, sponsors, tournaments. I felt like an unwanted guest crashing their party. It really hurt me back then.”
“They wanted me to play to their tune — be politically correct, fit into their script. It hurt me so much that I even changed my behavior, hoping they’d accept me. In the end, I understood that I had to stay true to myself and accept that some people will never like me. And that’s fine. I am who I am and I sleep peacefully.”
Djokovic will begin his 2026 season at the Adelaide Open in Australia.
