Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta said they don’t need to feel vindicated after Davis Cup win against Denmark. Spain were in a tricky spot as they were trailing 0-2 against the Danes but bounced back to make it to the last eight of the David Cup finals.
Spain were without the services of US Open champion Carlos Alcaraz, Marcel Granollers and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina but they were able to turn the tables.
Pablo Carreno Busta defeated Elmer Moller by 6-2, 6-3 whereas Pedro Martinez won against Holger Rune by 6-1 4-6 7-6 after saving a match point.
As per Punto de Break, the reporter said: “Is there a sense of vindication on the part of this group, in getting through this tie without names like Alcaraz or Granollers?”
Carreno Busta responded: “No, in the end, we don’t need to vindicate ourselves. Things have turned out the way they have; we haven’t been able to count on players who could have been part of the team for whatever reason, whether it was injuries or fatigue.
“It’s good that all the players are available for the captain, so he can see that the team is a team, that we don’t just depend on one player.
“It’s clear that if we had the US Open singles and doubles champion, everything would be easier (smiles), but things have turned out the way they have.
“Yesterday we didn’t have that luck, and today, however, we managed to turn it around. Pedro was stellar, Jaume managed to bounce back after yesterday’s defeat: we’ve all done our part, and now we celebrate together.”
Spain joins Italy, Germany, Czechia, Austria, France, Argentina and Belgium – who stunned Australia – in the Davis Cup Finals.
