Indian tennis veteran Rohan Bopanna has announced his new doubles partnership with Colombia’s Nicolas Barrientos for the 2024 Australian Open.
The 44-year-old Bopanna, currently ranked 15th in the ATP doubles rankings, shared the news on social media, marking the start of a fresh chapter in his illustrious career.
Barrientos, 37, is ranked World No. 49 in doubles and has one ATP doubles title to his name. The right-handed Colombian is known for his solid baseline game and experience on the ATP circuit, making him a promising partner for Bopanna.
Bopanna’s decision to team up with Barrientos comes after the conclusion of his two-year partnership with Australian Matthew Ebden. The duo had a successful stint, winning four titles, including the men’s doubles crown at the 2023 Australian Open.
The triumph in Melbourne made Bopanna the oldest man ever to win a Grand Slam, a historic achievement that also propelled him to the top of the ATP doubles rankings earlier this year.
However, Bopanna and Ebden parted ways following their early exit from the ATP Finals group stage in Turin earlier this month. The partnership had its highs, including a runner-up finish at the US Open 2023, but ultimately concluded as both players sought new pairings for the upcoming season.
The Australian Open 2024, scheduled from January 12 to 26, will be the first Major outing for the new pairing of Bopanna and Barrientos. Fans and analysts will be watching closely to see how the duo fares in a highly competitive doubles field.
With Bopanna’s tactical acumen and powerful serves combining with Barrientos’ consistency and agility, the pair hopes to make a strong impact in Melbourne. The Indian star will also aim to build on his remarkable legacy as he enters the twilight of a storied career.
