World No.1 Novak Djokovic was delighted after his straight-set win against Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert in the opening round of Roland Garros. The Serbian, who is yet to win a single title in 2024, made it to the second round with a 6-4, 7-6(3), 6-4 win on Tuesday.
Djokovic feels he was able to lift his game in the crucial moments of the match, which he has done on numerous occasions in his glittering career.
“In the moments when it mattered I think I delivered, played a great tie-break, stayed focused,” Djokovic said in his post-match presser. “I’m glad that I started the way I started, the way I felt on the court. Compared to the previous weeks of tournaments I played, I felt good, and better. So I’m moving in a positive direction. It’s just the beginning.”
The three-time French Open champion was pleased with his performance but feels he could have done better on his return, which has always been his strength. Djokovic also showered praise on Pierre-Hugues Herbert’s kick serves.
“I thought it was a good performance for me, solid,” Djokovic said. “Of course, I could have done better, I think, on return games, but also credit to him for serving very well, for changing things up… Every time I would step back for a second serve, and give him a little bit different look, he would see that, he would come in. His kick is tremendous. Honestly, one of the best kick serves I have faced. Very talented, mixing things up. He can come to the net, just very crafty with his hands.”
Novak Djokovic will need to at least reach the final to keep Jannik Sinner away from the numero uno position in the PIF ATP rankings. The 24-time Grand Slam champion will next meet Roberto Carballes Baena in the second round on Thursday.
