Former American player Steve Johnson has predicted that Novak Djokovic will return to the Australian Open in 2027. Djokovic made it to the final of the Australian Open 2026 but could not cross the last hurdle against Carlos Alcaraz in the summit clash at the Rod Laver Arena on Sunday.
The Serbian was chasing his record-breaking 25th Slam and his 11th Australian Open title. After his four-set loss, Djokovic hinted that he might not return to Melbourne Park in 2027.
“God knows what happens tomorrow, let alone in six or 12 months, so it has been a great ride – I love you guys.” Djokovic said while giving his gratitude to the Australian crowd at the trophy ceremony.
Djokovic then told media, “That’s why I left it open. I really don’t know. You’ve followed me for a long time and I don’t pretend or fake things. I told you for the last year or year and a half that I’m not sure how much and what is next.
I said I’d like to play until the 2028 Olympics, but that might mean playing one tournament a year, maybe ten, fifteen, two, or seven—I honestly don’t know.
However, Steve Johnson is optimistic that Djokovic will be once again seen at his favorite hunting ground.
He said on Tennis Channel, “I think we’ll see him again. And look, for Novak, nobody knows when the end is, except for him.
“He’s talked about maybe playing the Olympics coming up, all these things in a few years. As long as he wants to play, let’s let him play. Get him whatever he needs to get out there and play, two tournaments here, you name it.
“But I think he’s just going out enjoying his last few years on tour, whatever it may be. But I think we will see him in Australia next year.”
Djokovic would look to keep the good show in the rest of the season.
