America’s Taylor Fritz has picked Carlos Alcaraz as a tougher opponent than Jannik Sinner. The American recalled he had no chance against Alcaraz in the Laver Cup contest in 2024 when the Spaniard lifted his level and went into his own zone.
Fritz, on the other hand, reckons he has never got the same feeling while playing against Jannik Sinner.
Alcaraz has a 2-0 record against Fritz on the tour whereas Sinner has a 4-1 H2H against the American. Interestingly, Fritz is yet to win a set against Alcaraz.
Fritz admitted he felt helpless against Alcaraz in the Laver Cup contest.
Taylor Fritz said on the Guardian, “I’d say Carlos is the harder opponent for me, but I have to add the caveat that when we played in the Laver Cup [last year], I ran into the on-fire version of him where it just feels like there’s nothing you can do.”
“So even though obviously, Sinner has gotten me several times, pretty routinely, at least in those matches I felt like I could play tennis.
“In the Laver Cup with Carlos I felt, for about 80 to 90% of the match, I couldn’t do anything.”
Meanwhile, Alcaraz and Sinner are currently the two best players in the world. The duo recently produced an epic Roland Garros final, in which Alcaraz had the final laugh after saving three championship points in five hours and 29 minutes contest.
Fritz, on the other hand, is currently playing in the Eastbourne Open. The World No.5 has made it to the quarterfinals of the tournament after beating Joao Foncesca in three sets. The top seed will face compatriot Marcus Giron in the quarters on Thursday.
