Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic couldn’t even reach the second week of the US Open after losing in the second and third round respectively. However, the Australian Open champion Jannik Sinner reached the fourth round of the New York Major after defeating Australian Christopher O’Connell 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 on Saturday.
The Italian wants to take one game at a time and not think too far ahead. The World No.1 brought his best to the court against the Australian and registered a convincing win to advance through at the Flushing Meadows.
“Everything can happen in this sport, so I try to stay on my side of the net and I’m trying to take [the tournament] day by day,” Sinner said in his on-court interview. “Each opponent is a very tough challenge and [I am] also enjoying every moment on the court. There have been already a couple of upsets, so let’s see what’s coming.
“But I’m very happy to still be here and hopefully I can play as many matches as possible. But as I said, we go day by day and then we’ll see how it goes.”
Jannik Sinner will take on local favorite Tommy Paul in the round of 16 on Monday.
On the other hand, 2021 US Open Champion Daniil Medvedev was also able to go through after defeating young Italian Flavio Cobolli 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 in two hours, and 18 minutes. The Russian reckons he can win his second Major title if he plays well but if doesn’t, he can be beaten by anybody on a given day.
“I said it before the match that for me the upsets don’t really matter. The only thing [is when] the conditions are a bit tricky the favourites maybe have less margin than the other guys. Just have to be more cautious,” said Medvedev, who improved to 38-13 on the season [21-6 on hard courts].
“If I play good tennis I can win the whole thing. If I don’t play good I can lose against anyone.”
Medevedev will face Portugal’s Nuno Borges in the next round.
