World No.1 Jannik Sinner bested 2021 US Open champion Daniil Medvedev 6-2, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4 at the Arthur Ashe Stadium to reach the semifinal at the Flushing Meadows. With this win, the Italian qualified for his third major semi-final of the season.
Sinner took the first set convincingly by 6-2 but Medvedev bounced back well to take the second set by 6-1 to level terms. However, the Australian Open champion won the next two sets to go through to the next after battling for two-hour and 39-minutes.
Sinner admitted that it was a very tough match as they have played each other frequently in the recent past.
“It was very tough, we know each other quite well,” said Sinner, who committed 38 unforced errors to Medvedev’s 57. “We played in Australia this year and then London. We knew it was going to be very physical. It was strange the first two sets because whoever made the first break then started to roll.”
Meanwhile, the 23-year old, who was recently involved in a doping controversy, converted 28 of his 33 net points. The Italian said he has working hard on his net game with the team.
“We tried to work really hard on this aspect of the game. I know I can improve a lot, especially going to the net,” Sinner said. “I tried to serve-and-volley a couple of times, trying to mix something in. I’m very happy with how I’ve done it today and let’s see how I can handle the next opponent.”
Sinner has been ticking the right boxes in the ongoing season and he has been going from strength to strength. The youngster will take on Britain’s Jack Draper in the semifinal of the New York Major on Saturday.
