Australia’s showman Nick Kyrgios believes Novak Djokovic needs to be playing at all cost and he is happy that the Serbian has received the green signal to take part in the Australian Open 2023. Djokovic could not take part in the Happy Slam in 2022 as he was deported from the country after vaccination debacle.
Djokovic is one of the greatest players of all time and it would be a shame if he is not allowed to play at the major events. The Serbian also could not take part in the US Open due to immigiration rules of the country.
Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic has won the Australian Open on nine occasions and he is famously crowned as King of Melbourne.
“I think Novak needs to be playing at all costs,” Kyrgios told AFP at the World Tennis League in Dubai on Wednesday.
“He’s one of the greatest of all time and as long as he’s going to be playing and hanging around, we need him at these tournaments.”
Nick Kyrgios wants the Australian Open to be competitive and feels Djokovic’s participation will make it tough it difficult for others.
“I think, as a competitor, I want to see him there,” Kyrgios said of Djokovic.
“And if I win a tournament, if you don’t go through Novak, then you kind of know the tournament isn’t really a tournament.”
On the other hand, Kyrgios and Djokovic had taken on each other in the Wimbledon final which the latter won in four sets. The duo was expected to take on each other on Wednesday in the ongoing World Tennis League in Dubai but Djokovic had to pull out of the contest as he wasn’t doing well.
“Novak Djokovic announced that he would not be partaking in the World Tennis League event tonight (21 December) due to not feeling 100 per cent well enough to play,” read a statement released by the WTL.
