Chennai Super Kings’ all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin has revealed the franchise was willing to pay extra money to rope in Dewald Brevis during the Indian Premier League 2025. Brevis had gone unsold at the auction despite setting his base price at INR 75 lakhs, but later he was picked as an injury replacement for Gurjapneet Singh for INR 2.2 crore by Chennai Super Kings.
Brevis scored 225 runs in six matches for CSK at an average of 37.50 and a strike rate of 180 in IPL 2025 and thus he was one of the positives for the team.
Ashwin revealed that other franchises were not interested in paying extra money to Brevis during the last season of the tournament.
Ashwin said on his YouTube Channel, “Is he the next AB or the first DB? Brevis had a great time with CSK last year. I came to understand two or three other teams also spoke with him but they missed picking because of having to pay extra money. While picking up a player mid-season, there will be discussions with the player’s agent to negotiate on an ‘X’ amount apart from the base price to acquire his services. CSK were willing to pay the extra money due to which he (Brevis) came into the franchise.”
Meanwhile, Brevis smashed a 41-ball century against Australia in the second T20I at the Marrara Cricket Ground, Darwin on Tuesday. The 22-year-old scored an unbeaten knock of 125 runs off just 56 balls with the help of a 12 fours and eight sixes. This was Brevis’ first T20I century.
Brevis’ blistering century helped South Africa post 218 runs on the board. In response, Australia was bundled out for 165 and suffered a 53-run loss. With this win, the Proteas were able to level the three-match T20I series 1-1.
On the other hand, CSK had a disappointing season as the franchise ended as the cellar-dwellers of the tournament, managing only four wins in 14 games.
