Swiss Open European Championships canceled due to coronavirus

Following the outbreak of the COVID’19 pandemic spread across the globe, the effect has played a damaging role to the international Badminton calendar with the BWF body making an announcement last week that the cancellation of the Swiss Open and the European Championship will be put on hold after they failed in the attempts to secure suitable slots to kickstart the tournament this year.

In an official statement released by the BWF, it says that there are more changes made to the Badminton events this year with the cancelation of the YONEX Swiss Open 2020 and 2020 European championships now put on hold. Both tournaments remain suspended until a better replacement date is found.

The prestigious Swiss Open, which is a Super 300 event on the HSBC BWF World Tour, was scheduled initially to hold from March 17th to 22nd due to pandemic spread.

” The BWF in close consultation and agreement with Swiss badminton and tournament organizers, we have come to the conclusion that holding the tournament is no longer possible to later date in 2020.”

The last tournament held saw India’s B Sai Praneeth finishing as a runner up at 2019 Swiss open as he lost to China’s Shi Yuqi in the men’s singles finals.
