Ashes 2023: We definitely got out of jail – Cameron Green admits after drawn Test at Manchester

Australian all-rounder Cameron Green admitted the visitors definitely got out of jail after they managed to eke out a draw in the fourth Ashes Test match against England at Old Trafford, Manchester. Only 30 overs were possible on the fourth day’s play whereas not a single ball was bowled on the final day of the penultimate Ashes Test.

Australia were 214-5 in their second innings, and the tourists were still in arrears by 61 runs when rain came to their aid. Green, who hasn’t been at his best in the ongoing Ashes, admitted they were thoroughly dominated by England in the fourth Test.

England scored a gargantuan total of 592 runs after Zak Crawley produced the best knock of the series as he smashed 189 runs off just 182 balls. The home team took a massive lead of 275 runs after skittling out the visitors for 317 runs.

Green told cricket.com.au: “I think we definitely got away with one there.”

“There’s no point denying it. Whilst we were behind the game, and you never know what would have happened, cricket is a funny game, but England dominated this one.”

He added, “We definitely got out of jail. We didn’t play our best game. The rain gods were in our favour the last couple of days. You just take it and move on to the next game.”

Meanwhile, in 2019, England were able to level the scores (2-2) in the Ashes after winning the fifth Test match at Kennington Oval by 135 runs. Once again Australia will be entering the fifth Test match with a 2-1 lead and Green said they will aim to bring their best.

“The last time they were here they had a win here to retain the Ashes, but it’s a bit different this time around,” said Green.

“I’m sure a few guys are hurting from last time. We’ll keep it level-headed and looking forward to the next game.”

Green has scalped five wickets in three Test matches he has played in the ongoing Ashes. Moreover, he has scored only 103 runs at 20.60 in the series and has failed to deliver with both bat and ball.

The fifth and final Test match will be played at Kennington Oval, London from July 27.
