Australia’s talisman batsman Steve Smith has been named as the Test cricketer of the decade by the governing council. Smith has done a fine job for Australia over the years and he is currently placed at the numero uno position in the ICC Test rankings.
The former Australian skipper has scored 7040 in the ICC awards period and has an impressive average of 65.29 during the considered time. In fact, Smith’s average is the highest in the top 50 batsmen.
The right-hander, who is known for his impeccable technique, has scored 26 centuries and 28 fifties in the last decade as he has played at the top of his game. Smith hardly has a chink in his armour and it is a difficult job for the opposition bowlers to dismiss him.
Smith has been a consistent performer for Australia and he has delivered the goods in all the conditions. Overall, Smith has scored 7229 runs in 74 Test matches at an impressive average of 62.3. In fact, Smith started his career as a leg-spinner but developed his batting to become one of the best red-ball batsmen of the current era.
Smith has also been named in ICC’s Test team of the decade for his impressive performances in the last ten years.
Meanwhile, Smith has been the fulcrum of Australia’s batting in the last ten years. Smith has a great record while playing against teams like India and England and he has delivered the goods in all kinds of conditions. Smith has an initial trigger moment, which makes the bowlers ball on his pad but the right-hander is strong on his pads.
Smith will look to continue his good show going but he isn’t in the best of forms in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar trophy against India. The right-hander has only scored 10 runs in the two Test matches against India and he will look to turn the tables in the next two games.
