IPL 2022: MS Dhoni told me to play straight, I have to give credit to him – Devon Conway

Chennai Super Kings opener Devon Conway gave credit to his captain MS Dhoni after he played a match-winning knock of 87 runs against Delhi Capitals at the Dr. DY Patil Sports Academy, Mumbai on Sunday. Conway revealed MS told him to play straight after he was dismissed while playing the sweep in the previous match and he was able to reap rewards after applying Dhoni’s advice in his game.

The left-hander scored his third consecutive fifty of the season as he has provided great starts to his team. Conway batted at the top of his game and added a fine alliance of 110 runs with Ruturaj Gaikwad, who also scored a decent knock of 41 runs.

The left-hander from New Zealand scored seven fours and five sixes in his knock as he took the attack against the Delhi Capitals bowlers. It was an unbelievable knock from Conway as he gave a fine platform to his team along with Ruturaj Gaikwad.

CSK were able to post a huge total of 208 runs after they were put in to bat by Rishabh Pant and a lot of credit goes to Devon Conway. The left-hander was awarded the Player of the Match as CSK won by 91 runs.

Devon Conway said in the post-match presentation, “The thought process was just about keeping it simple. It was just about communicating with Ruturaj. With Hussey, I just discussed about how the surface would be and who the bowlers would be to target. I am just happy to build that partnership up with Rutu, and the way he’s playing, he makes my job easier. I have to be true to myself, authentic to myself. I look to play cricket shots and just assess where to put my foot down. I have to give credit to MS, because I got out trying to play the sweep in the last game, and he told me to look to play straight.”

On the other hand, Moeen Ali scalped three wickets and played a key role in skittling out the opposition at 117. Ali accounted for Rishabh Pant, Ripal Patel, and Mitchell March as he returned with fine figures of 3-13 in his quota of four overs.

Ali said after the game, “Any win at the moment is great for us. To win against a great side gives us a lot of confidence going forward. I think we got a great score, we missed out on a few at the end, we were probably looking at 210-215, happy to have gotten over the 200 mark. We knew it would be a good score with the spinners we’ve got. We just stayed in the moment, in the present and got some nice shots in the end. I hurt my ankle a bit so had to change my action a bit, but it was probably for the best. My primary thing is to spin it as much as I can, the wickets are gripping a bit now. We have an amazing fanbase, playing for CSK is amazing because I didn’t realize how big (the fanbase) was before I came here, but it is a massive, massive franchise and the fanbase is unbelievable.”

The defending champions will next take on Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on Thursday.
