Ravichandran Ashwin Announces Retirement From International Cricket

In a stunning turn of events during the ongoing Test match at the Gabba, Indian cricket fans were left in shock as Ravichandran Ashwin, one of India’s most celebrated Test players, announced his retirement from international cricket.

The announcement came following a day of intense cricketing drama, with visuals of Ashwin sharing an emotional embrace with Virat Kohli making the rounds on social media.

Ashwin, 38, broke the news in an emotional press conference after the day’s play. “This will be my last day as an Indian cricketer in all formats at the international level,” Ashwin stated, his voice filled with emotion. “As a cricketer, I am done, but I might still be involved in the game in other capacities.”

The announcement marks the end of an illustrious career that spanned over 13 years. Since making his debut in November 2011 against West Indies, Ashwin has been a cornerstone of India’s Test team. With 537 wickets, he retires as India’s second-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket, trailing only Anil Kumble.

Career Highlights

Ashwin’s career has been defined by milestones and match-winning performances. Known for his cricketing acumen and remarkable ability to adapt to varied conditions, he was a nightmare for batsmen both on spin-friendly Indian pitches and challenging overseas tracks.

  • Fastest to Milestones: Ashwin holds the record as the fastest bowler to reach 300 and 450 Test wickets. He was also the quickest Indian to take 50 Test wickets.
  • All-round Contributions: Ashwin is one of only three cricketers in Test history to have achieved the double of 500 wickets and 3,000 runs, alongside Stuart Broad and Shane Warne.
  • Memorable Performances: From his nine-wicket debut against West Indies in 2011 to single-handedly dismantling Australia in home series, Ashwin has delivered standout performances throughout his career.
  • Recognition: He was named ICC Test Cricketer of the Year and has featured multiple times in ICC’s Test Team of the Year.

Beyond his bowling, Ashwin’s batting was often the key in pressure situations. His five Test centuries and numerous gritty knocks down the order were instrumental in several Indian victories.

An Emotional Farewell

Ashwin thanked his teammates, coaches, and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for their support. He reserved special mentions for Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, and Cheteshwar Pujara, whom he described as “the last bunch of OGs” in the dressing room.

In a heartfelt gesture, he also acknowledged the Australian team for being fierce competitors, adding, “I’ve enjoyed my time playing against them.”

While Ashwin chose not to take questions during the press conference, he hinted at staying involved with the sport. “This game has given me everything. As a cricketer, I’ve stopped, but I might go on to be involved with the game,” he concluded.
