Joburg Super Kings captain Faf du Plessis was delighted after his team got off to a winning start in the ongoing SA20, beating MI Cape Town by six runs (DLS method) on Saturday. After electing to field first, the Super Kings had the Cape Town reeling at 30-4 after 8.3 overs.
The start got from bad to worse for the visitors as they were reduced to 75-6 after 13.3 overs. However, George Linde and Delano Potgieter scored 48 and 44 runs respectively to help their team post a fighting score of 140 runs on the board.
In response, Joburg Super Kings were 82-3 when rain intervened and allowed no further play, and at that situation, the score was just par DLS.
Faf du Plessis scored a quickfire 30 off just 23 balls and he was awarded Player of the Match.
He said in the post-match presentation, “Was a tricky wicket. The new ball moved. The intent was needed. If you stand still, you are a sitting target. The DLS is way more complicated than I can imagine. We were excellent on the field. On a wet outfield. We didn’t bowl well in the last 3 overs. We gave away 20 runs more than what we expected. Three to four wickets early broke their back while batting.”
On the other hand, MI Cape Town captain Rashid Khan said toss plays a key role when the weather is like this.
He said after the game, “The toss is important when the weather is like this. But toss is not under our control. But we fought back amazingly well with the bat. The wicket was good to bat on. The weather made it tricky for the batters. We have played here before. The ball is coming nicely. The weather made it harder. But in the second innings, it was hard for the bowlers because of the rain. Before the competition, we had a good couple of weeks. Everyone is very excited. We think this is going to be a good year for us.”
Joburg Super Kings will next face Durban Super Giants at the Kingsmead, Durban on Tuesday.
