Sanju Samson Excluded from Vijay Hazare Trophy Squad; Champions Trophy Inclusion Uncertain

Sanju Samson has found himself at the center of controversy following his exclusion from Kerala’s Vijay Hazare Trophy roster. The Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) clarified that his absence stemmed from his inability to attend the pre-tournament camp, but his omission has raised eyebrows, especially with the Champions Trophy 2025 squad announcement looming.

Misunderstandings Over Availability

The controversy began when Samson was accused of voluntarily withdrawing from the Vijay Hazare Trophy. However, reports suggest that he only informed the KCA about his inability to attend the preparatory camp.

Speaking to Onmanorama, KCA Secretary Vinod S Kumar revealed that Samson had communicated through emails but did not provide specific reasons for his unavailability.

“This is to inform you that I’ll not be available for the camp,” read Samson’s email, according to Vinod. “But he did not specify any reasons.” The KCA faced another setback as senior player Sachin Baby was sidelined due to an injury, leaving the team without two experienced players. In response, the KCA decided to give younger players an opportunity.

Samson reportedly expressed his readiness to join the team just before Kerala’s opening match against Baroda on December 23. However, the KCA stood firm on its decision, citing fairness to the players already selected. “By then, the squad was finalised. It would have been unfair to sacrifice a youngster at that point,” explained Vinod.

The decision to exclude Samson shocked the star cricketer, as Kerala went on to win only two of their five group-stage matches, resulting in an early exit from the tournament.

Samson’s exclusion has led to speculation about his chances of making India’s Champions Trophy squad, which is expected to be announced later this week.

As the cricketing fraternity awaits the BCCI’s decision, Samson’s case highlights the challenges of balancing national and domestic commitments, especially for high-profile players. For now, his fate lies in the hands of selectors, who must decide whether his leadership skills and recent form warrant a place in the Champions Trophy squad.
