Sunil Gavaskar feels Rohit Sharma might step down from captaincy if he fails to score runs in rest of BGT 2024-25 against Australia

Legendary Sunil Gavaskar believes Indian captain Rohit Sharma might relinquish his leadership duties if he fails to score runs in the rest of the Border-Gavaskar trophy against Australia. Rohit is under the pump as a leader as he has failed to lead from the front in the ongoing Test series.

After missing the opening Test at Perth due to personal reasons, Rohit has failed to get a big score in the three innings while batting in the middle order.

In the pink-ball Test at Adelaide, Rohit returned with scores of 3 and 6. Rohit could only manage 10 runs in the first innings at the Gabba, Brisbane as he was dismissed by Pat Cummins. Many cricket experts also believe that Rohit hasn’t been up to the mark as a leader as he has been defensive in his approach.

“I think Rohit obviously will get the opportunity to play in the next couple of matches, that’s for sure. But maybe at the end of it, if he hasn’t scored runs, my feeling is that he himself will take the call,” Sunil Gavaskar said on ABC Sport on Tuesday.

Gavaskar added that Rohit would not want to be a burden on the team as he isn’t in the best of forms. Rohit has managed a solitary fifty in the last 13 Test innings.

“He’s a very conscientious cricketer, he will not want to be a burden on the team. He’s a cricketer who cares very deeply for Indian cricket. So if he doesn’t score runs in the next couple of games, I think he himself will step down,” Gavaskar added.

Meanwhile, after persistent rain throughout the third Test, the match has ended in a draw. The fourth Test match between India and Australia will be played at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground from 26th December.
