Sunil Gavaskar has his say on the alleged rift between Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli

To say that the last few days of Indian cricket have been quite chaotic would be an understatement. Ever since the BCCI announced that Rohit Sharma has been appointed as the new ODI captain of Team India replacing Virat Kohli, speculations have been rife surrounding the relationship between the two senior figures.

Although President Sourav Ganguly later confirmed that the board wanted uniform white-ball captaincy following Kohli’s decision to step down as T20 captain, the BCCI has done little in terms of communication to crush those rumours and speculations.

Reports from various quarters now state that Virat Kohli might miss the ODI series against South Africa which would’ve been his first under new captain Rohit Sharma. To make matters worse Rohit is reported to be suffering from an injury and will not be able to take part in the Test series.

While this has led to many people believing that the relationship between Kohli and Rohit is far from ideal, former cricket great Sunil Gavaskar thinks it is unfair to point fingers without having the exact knowledge of the situation.

“The question is, ‘is there anything simmering at all (between Kohli and Rohit)?’ Unless both the players come out with something, we should not jump to conclusions. Yes, Azharuddin has said something but if he has got some inside information about what has happened then he should be coming out and telling us what happened,” Gavaskar said on India Today.

However, it must be mentioned here that neither Virat Kohli nor the BCCI have officially confirmed the former ODI captain’s absence from the ODI series against South Africa.

Despite what people believe and which player they support, Gavaskar is of the opinion that both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have been excellent servants of Indian cricket over the years. Regardless of what the actual situation might be right now, they deserve better than being at the end of needless speculations.

“Till then, I will give the benefit of the doubt to both the players. Because both have served Indian cricket brilliantly and I don’t think it is fair at all for any one of us, without having exact information, to be pointing fingers at either of them,” Gavaskar concluded.
