Suryakumar Yadav Maintains Second Spot in ICC T20I Rankings; Ruturaj Gaikwad Makes Significant Gains

India’s Suryakumar Yadav has held on to his second position in the latest ICC Men’s T20I batting rankings, boasting 821 rating points. He remains behind Australia’s Travis Head, who leads with 844 points. Suryakumar’s consistent performances have solidified his place among the world’s elite T20I batters.

England’s Phil Salt is third with 797 points, followed by Pakistan captain Babar Azam (755), Mohammad Rizwan (746), and Jos Buttler (716).

Ruturaj Gaikwad has made a remarkable climb in the rankings, ascending 13 places to seventh. His unbeaten 77 off 47 balls in India’s dominant 100-run victory against Zimbabwe in the second T20I was pivotal in this rise. Gaikwad’s performance is particularly notable as it comes in a series where India is showing its emerging talent, with many senior players rested following the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 triumph and the retirement of key figures like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja.

Alongside Gaikwad, Rinku Singh and Abhishek Sharma have also made significant strides. Rinku, who was part of the reserves for the T20 World Cup, moved up four places to 39th after an aggressive 48 not out off 22 balls in the second T20I. Abhishek Sharma, following a disappointing duck in the first game, scored a magnificent 100 off just 47 balls in the second match, earning him a debut ranking at 75th.

Zimbabwe’s Brian Bennett also made a notable leap, climbing 25 places to 96th after two quick-fire innings of 22 off 15 and 26 off nine balls in the series against India.

In the bowlers’ T20I rankings, Axar Patel remains the highest-ranked Indian at ninth, despite dropping two places to 644 rating points. Fellow spinner Kuldeep Yadav slipped three spots to 11th, and Jasprit Bumrah, the T20 World Cup’s player of the tournament, also dropped two places to 14th.

However, Ravi Bishnoi’s six wickets in the first two games against Zimbabwe have propelled him eight places up to 14th. Zimbabwe’s Blessing Muzarabani also moved up eight places to 55th, thanks to his economical 1/17 in the first T20I which helped secure a win for his team.

The top 10 of the bowlers’ rankings saw some shifts with Australia’s Adam Zampa climbing to seventh, Afghanistan’s Fazalhaq Farooqi moving to eighth, and Sri Lanka’s Maheesh Theekshana entering the top ten at tenth position.

In the T20I all-rounders’ rankings, India’s vice-captain Hardik Pandya slipped to second place, overtaken by Sri Lanka’s Wanindu Hasaranga. Axar Patel is currently 12th among all-rounders. Washington Sundar has entered the top 50, boosted by his quickfire 27 runs in the first game and three wickets over two matches.

India’s tour of Zimbabwe has provided an opportunity for emerging players to show their talent and make a case for regular inclusion in the national team. The series has been a platform for young and upcoming cricketers to step up and fill the void left by the retiring stalwarts, ensuring that the future of Indian cricket remains bright.
