Former New Zealand all-rounder Scott Styris feels the Virat Kohli-Gautam Gambhir relationship will be a case of wait and watch. Kohli has joined India’s ODI squad in Sri Lanka ahead of the three-match series against the hosts.
The star Indian batter has had a couple of altercation incidents with Gautam Gambhir in the Indian Premier League, which raised eyebrows when the latter was named India’s chief coach. However, the newly appointed head coach squashed any claims of it becoming a hurdle in his stint.
Gambhir said he shares a professional relationship with Virat Kohli and both of them will work together to take Indian cricket to new heights.
“Yeah, it’s a really good question. I think it’s wait and see. I don’t think anyone can sit here and say it’s gonna work that well or it’s not gonna work. I think both players will just tap to bite their tongue a little bit and observe and watch the way that, in Virat’s case, watch the way Gautam’s looking to run the team and Gautham will be looking for Virat’s leadership to help all the younger players,” said Styris on India Today.
Styris added Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir have smart cricketing brains and will work together to do the best for Indian cricket.
“So there’s so much that we don’t know about that relationship and how it’s going to operate in a team with two different players having two different levels of power in that group as well. So I think they’re both. Firstly, they’re both terrific cricketers. They both have very good cricket brains. I think they’d both be smart enough to work out a way where it can be beneficial to the team and their performances,” said Styris.
Gambhir has kicked off his coaching stint on a high as India has taken an impregnable lead of 2-0 in the three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka.
