Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag has claimed that his team can beat anyone after defeating Barcelona by 2-1 (aggregate 4-3) at Old Trafford in the Europa League on Thursday. The Red Devils have already savored success against top teams like Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham and Manchester City in the ongoing season.
Meanwhile, Robert Lewandowski scored from the spot kick in the 18th minute. However, Fred equalized for the home team soon after the half-time break. Antony then gave a 2-1 lead to his team as he scored in the 73rd minute of play.
The Dutchman feels this win against a top Barcelona team will give his side a lot of confidence for the rest of the season.
“You need results to get that strong belief,” Ten Hag said.
“I think this is another step because when you can beat Barcelona, one of the best teams in this moment in Europe, then your belief can be really strong then you are able to beat anyone.”
With this thrilling win against Blaugrana, Manchester United has made it to the Round of 16 of the Europa League.
“It was a magnificent night,” Ten Hag said.
“I think it is brilliant when you can beat Barcelona, eight points ahead of Real Madrid in La Liga and we have seen in this week Real Madrid playing.
“We did a magnificent performance and we have to take it with us in the season, take it with us in the belief that we can win big games.”
The 52-year-old showered praise on Fred for playing a key role in the midfield and keeping Frenkie de Jong at bay.
“He had an important role already last week in Barcelona, and this week the same, first he had to stop Frenkie de Jong playing,” Ten Hag said.
“He had to play as a mosquito around him and go behind him and he did it magnificently. Last week he gave a brilliant assist for Rashy [Marcus Rashford] in Barcelona and today he scored a goal, brilliant performance.”
Manchester United will next face Newcastle United in the final of the EFL Cup on Sunday.
