December 3 proved to be a mixed bag in the 2024-25 I-League season, with Dempo SC continuing its impressive form while Gokulam Kerala and Aizawl FC settled for a hard-fought draw.
Dempo SC extended its unbeaten run with a narrow 1-0 victory over Namdhari FC at the Namdhari Stadium, courtesy of a decisive goal by Serbian forward Matija Babović early in the second half. The Golden Eagles notched their third consecutive clean sheet, securing their second win in a row to climb to the top of the table with seven points.
The breakthrough came in the 47th minute when Knerkitalang Buam’s perfectly weighted long ball split Namdhari’s high defensive line. Babović latched onto it and coolly slotted the ball past a helpless Nishan Singh.
Namdhari FC, still searching for their first win of the season, struggled to create clear chances and remain in 10th place with a solitary point. Dempo, riding on a solid defensive performance and Babović’s clinical finishing, continues to set the pace early in the league.
Meanwhile, Gokulam Kerala’s home opener at the EMS Corporation Stadium in Kozhikode ended in a 1-1 draw against Aizawl FC. Despite dominating large parts of the game, the Malabarians needed a stoppage-time equaliser to salvage a point.
Aizawl struck first in the 13th minute through Hriata, who capitalized on poor marking to head in a corner from Biakdika. The visitors maintained a compact defense and frustrated Gokulam’s attacking trio, particularly Mali striker Adama Niane, who struggled to convert promising opportunities.
Gokulam’s persistence finally paid off in the first minute of added time. Rishad unleashed a stunning left-footed volley from outside the box, leaving Aizawl goalkeeper Ramchhana with no chance as the ball nestled in the top corner.
The second half saw end-to-end action, with both teams creating chances but failing to find the decisive goal. Gokulam now has two draws from three matches, while Aizawl adds another point to its tally in what has been a string of closely contested games this season.
As Dempo continues its strong start and Gokulam searches for a breakthrough win, the I-League season is shaping up to be a competitive affair. Namdhari and Aizawl will also look to improve as the battle for supremacy intensifies in the coming weeks.
