Euro 2024: These players have made history and they still have a long way to go – Luis de la Fuente after Spain beat England in final

Spain’s Luis de la Fuente hailed his players after they defeated England in Euro 2024 final by 2-1 in Berlin on Sunday. Spain went unbeaten in the tournament and became the first team to do so in the history of the tournament.

Morata-led team was the best in the tournament as they dominated the opposition and registered wins against teams like Croatia, Germany, France, and England.

Meanwhile, Spain took the lead in the 47th minute with Nico Williams scoring after the half-time break. But, England was able to come back against the run of play as substitute Cole Palmer scored in the 73rd minute. However, Mikel Oyarzabal struck an 86th-minute winner to take Spain to glory.

“It’s not that I thought we were favourites, but I felt we were in a position to win the tournament and we have done,” the Spain boss said in a news conference.

“It’s hard to improve on what we have done here, but this group can keep growing because they do not tire of hard work, competing and trying to win.

“I am proud of them and happy about the excitement we have generated back home. These players have made history and they still have a long way to go.”

With this win, Spain became the only team to win Euro on four occasions, one more than Germany. Midfielder Rodri, who was named the Player of the Tournament, shared his delight after Spain’s win.

“What a day, probably the best of my sporting career,” he told reporters. “We are the most decorated side in the European Championships.

“There has been talk about the previous generations that laid the path for us and now we are champions of Europe. It’s an incredible day for everyone. We have made history.

“We have beaten four past World Cup winners along the way. The mentality of this team … many of us have been European champions at youth level and now we are champions of Europe.”
