Aymeric Laporte’s switching of allegiance from France to Spain has already rocked the football world. While his addition to Spain’s squad will definitely boost La Roja’s chances in Euro 2020, it could spell bad news for captain Sergio Ramos.
Following Luis Enrique’s request, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) sped up the process of approving Laporte’s Spanish citizenship. He will now be eligible for inclusion in the European Championships squad and will play a key role too, looking at how he has earned a name among the world’s best defenders in the last couple of years.
However, his place in the Spanish squad might come at the cost of Ramos’ place. Before it looked like Ramos, Pau Torres, Inigo Martinez and Eric Garcia would be Enrique’s first four choices as defenders. Even Diego Llorente had an outside chance.
But the persistent injuries Ramos has suffered this season has pushed him right down to the bottom of that pecking order. He has played only five games for Real Madrid this season and two for Spain. Moreover, Luis Enrique has also hinted that he will only carry the fittest players to the tournament.
“I will take the players I think are in the best shape for the European Championship,” Enrique told Movistar.
This might not look good for Ramos but this is how it is right now. All of Laporte, Martinez, Torres, Garcia and Llorente are ahead in the pecking order now unless Enrique decides to take a chance with the La Roja captain’s fitness.
Spain’s squad for Euro 2020 is expected to be announced next Thursday (May 20). The size of the squad can be between 23 and 26 players and it remains to be seen whether Ramos will be able to make the final cut.
Ramos is a highly experienced defender with 180 caps to his name for Spain. He has scored 23 goals for his country as well. If Enrique does decide to carry the 35-year-old to the Championships, it will be mainly because of the experience Ramos brings with himself.
