Indian Boxer Lovlina Borgohain had to settle for a Bronze medal after she lost the semifinal of Welterweight of Tokyo Olympics against the World No.1 Busenaz Surmeneli of Turkey by 5-0. The Turkish champion dominated the contest from the get-go and the Indian Boxer had no answer to her onslaught.
The judges ruled the match in favour of Busenaz Surmeneli by 30-26, 30-26, 30-25, 30-25, 30-25. Meanwhile, Lovlina Borgohain put on a brave performance as she tried her best.
It was the maiden Olympics for the 23-year old Boxer from Assam and she has come up with an inspiring performance. Lovlina has become the third Indian Boxer to win an Olympic medal after Vijender Singh and Mary Kom.
Lovlina has bagged the third medal for the country after Mirabai Chanu won the Silver medal in Weightlifting of 49 kg category whereas PV Sindhu won her second medal at the Olympics as she won Bronze medal after beating He Bingjiao of China in straight sets.
On the other hand, Borgohain had to take a lot of punches from Busenaz as the no.1 seed outclassed the Indian. Borgohain punched above her weight right throughout the Olympics and this performance will surely add a shot in the arm to her game.
The 23-year old Boxer from Assam won her quarterfinal bout against China’s N.C Chen by 4-1 to confirm India’s second medal at the Games. India has bagged a medal at the Olympics in Boxing after nine years as Mary Kom won Bronze in London 2012. Lovlina is only 23 year old and she has shown the skills to go a long way in her career.
