Indian Men’s Hockey Team Embarks on Grueling Preparation for Paris Olympics

The Indian men’s hockey team set off on an intensive journey on Monday, aiming to bolster their mental and physical readiness ahead of the Paris 2024 Olympics. The team’s preparation includes a rigorous three-day camp at renowned adventurer Mike Horn’s base in Switzerland, followed by an extensive training camp in the Netherlands.

The Swiss camp, orchestrated by Mike Horn, is designed to instill unparalleled mental toughness. Known for his extreme adventures, Horn’s training regime is expected to push the players beyond their comfort zones. This unique experience is seen as a crucial step in ensuring the team is mentally fortified for the high-stakes environment of the Olympics.

Following their stint in Switzerland, the team will head to the Netherlands for a series of practice matches. This phase is crucial for refining tactics and enhancing match fitness against high-caliber European competition. The intensive training and competitive exposure in the Netherlands aim to sharpen the team’s skills and strategies, ensuring they are in peak condition for the Olympics.

Team captain Harmanpreet Singh expressed optimism and enthusiasm about the upcoming training phases. “The upcoming experiences will ensure that the players are in the best state of mind and body before we begin our Olympic journey,” said Singh before the team’s departure. “The team is in high spirits and is looking forward to the final block of training.”

India’s Olympic campaign kicks off in Pool B with a match against New Zealand on July 27, followed by encounters with Argentina on July 29. The Tokyo bronze medalists will then face Ireland and Belgium on July 30 and August 1, respectively, before concluding their group stage with a clash against Australia on August 2. To advance to the knockout stage, India must finish in the top four of their pool.

Vice-captain Hardik Singh emphasized the team’s thorough preparation and readiness. “The team has prepared well so far, we identified areas that needed improvement from the London and Antwerp stages of FIH Pro League 2023/24 and worked on it in the training camp in SAI Bengaluru,” he said.

“The best teams in the world will take part in the Paris 2024 Olympics but this squad is ready to seize the opportunity and bring glory to India. We are confident in our abilities and excited about the journey ahead.”

Goalkeeper PR Sreejesh highlighted the importance of perseverance, drawing inspiration from the Indian cricket team’s resilience. “Never give up, fight till the last moment,” he reflected, echoing the spirit that the hockey team intends to bring to Paris. This mindset will be pivotal as India navigates the formidable challenges posed by top-tier international competitors.

As the team embarks on this challenging journey, fans and supporters back home are hopeful and excited, anticipating a remarkable performance from their national heroes on the world’s biggest stage.
