In front of a packed 5,000-strong crowd at the Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Stadium, Odisha Warriors etched their name in history by defeating JSW Soorma Hockey Club 2-1 in the thrilling final of the inaugural Women’s Hockey India League on Sunday.
Rutuja Pisal emerged as the hero for the Warriors, scoring both goals to secure the coveted trophy. The match, filled with end-to-end action, showcased the best of women’s hockey as the two sides traded blows in equal measure, keeping the crowd on the edge of their seats.
The game started with Warriors captain Neha Goyal creating an early chance, linking up with Freeke Moes at the baseline. However, Soorma’s solid defense, led by Maria Verschoor and goalkeeper Savita Punia, thwarted the effort.
In the 13th minute, Rutuja Pisal signaled her intent when she received a pass from Neha Goyal inside the circle. Though her initial attempt was saved, she capitalized moments later. Victoria Sauze’s rapid swipe deflected off Vaishnavi Phalke’s stick, allowing Rutuja to lob the ball over a diving Savita Punia to give the Warriors a crucial lead.
JSW Soorma responded aggressively, earning a penalty corner soon after. Penny Squib smashed an unstoppable drive past Odisha’s defense, leveling the score. Jude Menezes’ side looked threatening in the second half, with Charlotte Englebert and Sonam pressing high, but they failed to convert their opportunities.
Rutuja Pisal sealed the match with her second goal, pouncing on a turnover inside the Soorma circle. Her clinical finish ensured the Warriors held on to their lead despite late pressure from the Soorma attackers.
The Odisha Warriors’ victory marks a historic moment for women’s hockey, with the league becoming a symbol of the sport’s growing prominence. For the crowd and the players, this thrilling final served as a celebration of talent, determination, and the bright future of women’s hockey in India.
